Kawai Concert
On 3rd May 2025, marking one year since the inaugural concert of The Shigeru Kawai Concert Series, British baritone Huw Montague Rendall and pianist Joseph Middleton performed an exciting and expressive recital in the Debating Chamber for members of The Oxford Union. As one of the most exciting talents to have emerged in recent years, Huw Montague Rendall has already made hugely acclaimed debuts on some of the world’s most important stages. Huw was accompanied by Joseph Middleton, Director of Leeds Lieder, and internationally acclaimed as one of the finest musicians in his field. Joseph accompanied Huw with the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand piano, the big brother to the Shigeru Kawai SK-3 situated in the Goodman Library for musical Union members to make use of. The extraordinary acoustics of the Debating Chamber were immediately noticed, exposing Huw’s velvet tone married with the bell-like clarity from the SK-EX at the hands of Joseph Middleton. The performance won intense applause from the audience, demanding not one, but two encores from Huw and Joseph.
Tom Haydney, Marketing and Product Manager at Kawai UK comments:
I’m very grateful to our partners at The Oxford Union for their enthusiastic support in creating such an incredible concert series. The Debating Chamber is an excellent concert setting for piano and voice, allowing a tapestry of tonal character from the instrument to come to life in a truly historic and awe-inspiring setting. There is a great deal of excitement for the future of this unique partnership, and we continue to see world-renowned artists coming forward to perform as part of the Shigeru Kawai Concert Series at The Oxford Union.
