Three full days after your name has been entered into the Society's records (Rule 3(a)(i)(4)).

Visit the Oxford Union’s General Office during opening hours and request a temporary membership card for the event.

We recommend waiting a calendar week to collect your card. Membership cards are available for collection after three full business days from the Oxford Union’s general office during its open hours. For example, if you join on a Monday, then your card should be available by Friday. If you join on a Friday your card should be available by Thursday. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the office closes to collect your card.

Bring your Bod card, or other official identification, to the general office. Please recall that you will be required to pay a facilities fee when collecting your card. This fee helps maintain the Oxford Union's beautiful grade II and grade II* listed buildings.

The Oxford Union keeps cards available for collection for one year from the date of joining. The Oxford Union does not mail cards to members. If you cannot collect your card during the year you join, you may give permission for someone else to collect your card by emailing enquiries@oxford-union.org. That person must bring official identification to prove their identity. If someone else collects your card for you, you will need to visit the Oxford Union's general office when you first visit the Union so that we may activate your membership card.

Please email the Chair of the Debate Selection Committee (CDSC) for details: cdsc@oxford-union.org.

We recommend reading the Union’s current rules.

Whether there is a dress code depends on the event and your role at the event.

For most events (most speaker events and Thursday evening debates), no dress code is specified for members.

However, the Michaelmas Term 2025 rules included:

Rule 40(d) At all Public Business Meetings that begin at or after 7pm, the President, Librarian, Treasurer, and Secretary shall wear full evening dress or equivalent national dress.

Rule 49(e)(iii) At ticketed events, Standing Committee may specify a required dress code. Any person not conforming to the specified dress code may be excluded from the event without compensation.

If you will attend a ticketed event and have not been told the dress code, please check the Union’s social media accounts. If the dress code is not listed there, please email members of the committee.
