To celebrate Black History Month, the Oxford Union's Library team has put together a small display in the Goodman Library on Sir James Cameron Tudor, the society’s first president of African-Caribbean heritage, President Michaelmas 1942, featuring items from our archives.
Born and educated in Barbados, Sir James Cameron Tudor (18th October 1919 - 9th June 1995) came to Oxford to study PPE at Keble College. He was first elected to the Standing Committee for Hilary Term 1942. Serving as Treasurer the following term, he was finally elected President for Michaelmas Term of that year, becoming the Society’s first president of African-Caribbean heritage. He continued to serve in the Standing Committee until Michaelmas Term 1945. As well as his activities in the Oxford Union, Cameron was a member of the University Labour Club and an active member of the Keble JCR committee, serving as its president for 1943-4.
Sir James went on to become one of the Carribean's most prominent politicians and passed away in hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados, aged 75.
