Debating Success in Panama

Stellar performance for the Oxford Union's competitive squad at the World Championships.

The Oxford Union delegation had a successful showing at the 45th World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) in Panama, held from December 27th, 2024, to January 4th, 2025. As the largest and most prestigious debating tournament in the world, WUDC annually brings together teams from universities across the globe.

The Oxford Union was represented by five teams and two independent adjudicators, all of whom progressed to the elimination rounds. Oxford broke the second-most teams after the University of Sydney—an accomplishment that underscores the depth of talent in this delegation. A special congratulations goes to:

  • Aidan Woo & Elena Rădulescu (Oxford A): Broke 4th, Quarterfinalists

Elena was also recognized as the 9th best speaker overall and the 2nd best ESL speaker of the tournament.

  • Tajei Puthucheary & Chris Mentis Cravaris (Oxford C): Broke 9th, Grand Finalists
  • Marceli Potocki & Lwandle Ntshangase (Oxford E): Broke 33rd, Octofinalists
  • Jess Williamson & Bharath Anantham (Oxford D): Broke 34th, Octofinalists
  • Bonfilio Dazzle Gyula & Tanush Agarwal (Oxford B): Broke 37th, Partial Double Octofinalists

Further congratulations to alumni and former CDSCs Geneva Roy and Andrew Chen, who broke as judges. Geneva chaired a quarterfinal and panelled the EFL Grand Final, while Andrew chaired an octofinal and panelled a semifinal— impressive accomplishments for both.

WUDC, first held in 1981 by the Glasgow University Union, has grown into a global event, hosting over 400 teams from more than 380 universities. Oxford’s success this year is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and brilliance of the delegation.

The journey continues, and all eyes now turn to Sofia, Bulgaria, for the 46th WUDC in 2026.
