Free Speech

Since 1823, The Oxford Union has promoted critical thinking through the exchange and debate of a wide range of ideas and opinions, presented by a diverse range of speakers - some inspiring, others controversial.

We believe that the discussion of complex topics should not only be encouraged but is an essential element of any free society. We acknowledge that certain speakers may hold views that are regarded by some as unacceptable but nonetheless believe that it is more important to debate an issue in full rather than shy away from a difficult subject or to silence certain voices.

It is abundantly clear, however, that free speech is under threat. So too, therefore, is our past and present heritage in the making. As we celebrate our Bicentenary year of 2023 we not only reaffirm our commitment to this founding principle but look now to likeminded thinkers to champion our purpose in sustaining what former British Prime Minister and former Oxford Union Officer Harold MacMillan described as “The last bastion of free speech.”

Defend Free Speech

We will be launching a fund that will support our ability to uphold free speech. Funds will be used to ensure our grade II* listed chamber can remain fit for purpose by carrying out essential maintenance works - in good time, to prevent closure. Funds will also be used to procure state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities to enable us to promote the importance of free speech to global audiences via our YouTube channel, and also to ensure our debaters can continue to participate in high profile competitions, at home and abroad.

More details will be shared in due course.
