Pro-democracy Belarusian Opposition leader
Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya is a Belarusian human rights activist, politician and leader of the Belarusian democratic movement. She ran in the 2020 Belarusian presidential election as the main opposition candidate to incumbent Alexander Lukashenko, following the arrest of her husband, Sergei Tikhanovsky, after he declared his intention to run. As the leader of the Belarusian democratic movement, she has visited 25 countries, gathering support and advocating for the release of 600+ political prisoners and a peaceful transition of power through free and fair elections. In 2020–2021, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya became a symbol of the peaceful struggle for democracy and strong female leadership. For her efforts she was nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.
