If you would like to apply to be an Opening Speaker, please fill out the following form by 18 November 2021: https://forms.gle/GEa67AgEsh6TGNzz8
Drinks, debating, and no external speakers: the Members’ Debate is a novel approach to debates in the Union, but one that commemorates the history of the Oxford Union as a student debating society. The House will convene to debate two motions: “This House Would Rather Be an Artist than a Scientist” and “This House Believes Capitalism Cannot Solve the Climate Crisis”. As is traditional, a number of speakers will open each debate motion. However, these Opening Speakers will be Members who have applied, rather than committee or external guest speakers.
Drinks will be served in the Union Bar, and you are welcome to bring your drinks into the Chamber. The event will run as long as the Bar can stay open and Members still want to make floor speeches! Prizes will be awarded for the best opening speech and floor speech.
