Oxford Union News |
Debating, speaker events and social gatherings have always been at the heart of life in the Oxford Union. And where best to discover the highlights of years past than in the term cards that we carefully box up and archive here at Frewin Court? Today we present the term card from Hilary Term, 1970, when Guy Harkin was at the helm; he went on to offer a lifetime of service to Bolton as a Labour Councillor and Deputy Leader, Mayor and Alderman.
Of course, term cards are not accurate representations of events as they happened: then, as now, speakers often changed at the last minute, events were cancelled, and new ones added during term time. But from a glimpse of the card, from folk concerts to 'Emperor Rosko's International Road Show's Discotheque', to a visit from the Debating Team from H.R. Prison Leyhill, Union life was very much in tune with the times back in 1970.
If you have any term cards which we haven’t digitised and you would like to donate, please do get in touch. Likewise, if you have any memories that you would like to share with us, please contact the Development Office. We will be delighted to hear from you.
