susan abulhawa and the Oxford Union are pleased to confirm they have resolved the dispute that arose between them regarding the publication of an edited video of her speech in the 28 November 2024 debate "This house believes Israel is an apartheid state engaged in genocide"
The Oxford Union was founded on the principles of free speech and the preservation of open debate. The edited version of Ms. abulhawa's speech has been removed and her original speech has been reuploaded to the Oxford Union's platforms, preserving her contribution to the historic record.
It is a matter of regret that this dispute arose, and we are pleased it has been possible to resolve this matter.
susan abulhawa said "l agreed to this attend this debate in 2024 to leave a small contribution to the historic audit for future generations who will surely want to untangle this moment that has shocked the world's conscience. I am pleased that the integrity of my intellectual labour is now preserved in full."
Arwa Elrayess, the Former President of the Oxford Union Society, said "The Oxford Union has served as a beacon of free speech for more than 200 years. I have always made it clear, since the editing of susan's original speech, that it was important to me that the Oxford Union sincerely engage with this matter, ensuring that susan's rights as a speaker and writer were respected while meeting our legal duties. I am pleased it has been possible to reach agreement on this issue."
